Location - In the very west of the country, close to the border with Austria and the city of Vienna.
Weather - Bratislava has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. It is often windy with a marked variation between hot summers and cold, humid winters. The city is in one of the warmest and driest parts of Slovakia. Recently, the transitions from winter to summer and summer to winter have been rapid, with short autumn and spring periods. Snow occurs less frequently than previously.
Level Of English – Few speak English. Some speak German.
Prices – Quite cheap, especially leather goods.
Eating Out – Not bad but not their strongest point. Restaurants are not expensive and drinks are quite cheap here.
Courtesy – Quite helpful but nothing overboard.
Driving – Little hectic but generally courteous. Good road system.
Public Transport - Generally pretty good and cheap. Buses, trams and trolley buses are regular and the city has good rail links to Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the rest of Slovakia
Places Of Interest/Attractions - One of the most prominent structures in the city is Bratislava Castle along with the Grassalkovich Palace or the Presidential Palace. Most historical buildings of which there are many, are concentrated in the Old Town. Bratislava also has some beautiful parks and lakes.
Other Remarks - The city itself is quite an impressive sight at night and a lot of work is being done to make it attractive. Also the filled baguettes at the airport arrival cafe are very, good. For taxis it is best to arrange one beforehand through DA.SK as the ones at the airport tend to charge a fortune. Also there are many small taxi cards at hotels, so pick one up and call one or get the hotel to book one for you. The ones on the street can be overpriced.
